What is nail fungus?

Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common problem that affects the nail plate and sometimes the underlying nail bed, leading to discoloured, thickened and cracked nails.

Onychomycosis is the most common nail disease. Approximately 10% of the general population and 20% of the population over 60 years are affected by fungal nail infections.2

Nail fungus thrives in warm and humid environments. Places such as swimming pools, public showers and changing rooms, can involve a risk of infection. Warm and tight shoes also help the fungus to thrive.

Nail fungus symptoms

The nail fungus grows slowly and often shows slight symptoms to begin with. Nail fungus is characterised by the nails’ layers becoming ridged and brittle. The nail gradually becomes discoloured, thickened and may crack or flake off. The infected nail can eventually fall off. If left untreated, this condition can become more severe, spread to other nails and results in pain and discomfort, which can affect quality of life.

How does Emtrix work?

Emtrix promotes healing of discoloured and deformed nails resulting from fungal infection or psoriasis.

Increases hydration in the nail
Gently smooths the outer layers of the nail plate
Changes the nail's pH level to create a hostile environment and prevent further growth of the fungi

Before treatment After 1 week After 4 weeks After 8 weeks

Easy to use

Emtrix is easy to apply thanks to the silicone tip. No filing required.
Apply Emtrix once daily to affected nails, preferably in the evening just before bed time.

Hold the point of the tube onto the nail. Press lightly on the tube and spread out the solution with the tip. Cover each nail with a thin layer of the solution
It is important that the solution is also applied under the free edge of any affected nail. After application, the nail should be allowed to dry for a few minutes.

Avoid using nail polish during treatment as the desired effect of Emtrix will be diminished.

The Emtrix 10mL tube can last for approximately 4 months when treating a big toenail or 3 months for up to 3 smaller nails.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to see improvements?
Emtrix gives you healthier looking nails after 4 weeks, but the total treatment period is determined by the severity of the infection and the extent of the nail’s discolouration and damage. Normally 3-6 months of treatment are required to achieve a significant improvement. For best results, the treatment should be continued until a normal nail has grown out.

Do I need a prescription from a healthcare professional to use Emtrix?
Emtrix can be bought in pharmacy without prescription.

Are there any side-effects or interactions associated with Emtrix?
A slight temporary irritation of adjacent skin, as well as discolouration of the nail may occur. In certain cases, parts of the nail may loosen/separate from the underlying nail bed, which occasionally leads to detachment of the affected part of the nail. There are no known interactions with the solution.

Can Emtrix be used on children?
No studies have been conducted on the use of this product on children. We recommend consulting your doctor.

Can Emtrix be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No studies have been conducted on the use of this product during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We recommend consulting your doctor.

Can I use nail polish during the treatment?
No, nail polish prevents the absorption of the solution and inhibits the desirable effects.

How long does a tube of Emtrix last?
This depends on how many nails you are treating. In general, the tube lasts for approximately 4 months when treating a big toe nail or 3 months for up to 3 smaller nails.

Can the solution inside the tube be contaminated by fungus or bacteria?
The tube has a valve which prevents fluid or other substances from contaminating the contents of the tube
